Family portraits enhance your home with meaningful personal artwork

Family photos—these days it seems many families are happy to just have them on their devices. That’s better than not having family photos at all, for sure. However, aren’t your portraits meant for more than that? Studies show that having portraits displayed prominently in your home is good for everyone—the adults and kids alike.

I feel sad for all the families who are missing out on the many benefits of having family portraits displayed their home! Research shows that having portraits displayed prominently in your home increases the feeling of family connection and also says, “You matter. You belong.” Imagine the subtle message you are sending to your children and grandchildren when their portraits are displayed prominently in your home. Scrolling through a device to find your images just does not convey that same feeling.

That’s why it’s important to look at your family photo shoot as more than just an quick way to check something off your To Do List. True, it’s fun to post the images on social media and get lots of Likes. However, those are fleeting and not meaningful at all to your kids, who likely aren’t seeing your social media feed. Family portraits can actually transform your decor and change how it feels to be in your home. One client said, “Just sitting here with my new portraits on the wall makes me feel like I’m being hugged by my family.” That’s pretty powerful!

When you start thinking about your family portrait session, it’s important to start with the end in mind, thinking about where your portraits will be displayed and how they will become part of your home decor. You don’t have to have all the answers yet. In fact, it’s hard to really know, until after your session, when you see your own images.

At Dultmeier Photography, our first step is the Design Consultation, where we will explore ideas and discuss creative possibilities. This meeting is where we talk about clothing, the location for the session, personalities and relationships. We also talk about your wall spaces. This helps us identify spaces in your home where your artwork might best be displayed. We come up with a flexible plan, having an idea of what we want, but also open to whatever might happen at the session. I love to capture all the unexpected moments during a session, plus the poses we talked about.

Stuart, Florida family portrait artwork will fit with your home decor

The Dultmeier Photography style–casually elegant, authentic and relaxed– will enhance your home no matter what your taste--even if you don't think you have a particular decorating "style." Our portraits fit in with a range of styles, from eclectic, coastal, casual or even more on the formal side. The love and relationships captured in the portraits are the key features that will pull it all together. Additionally, we can choose substrates and framing to complement your decor. Options include Canvas, Acrylic, Metal, Art Prints and Black and White. Everything is custom, with or without framing.

Portraits are appropriate as focal points in both the main areas of your home and also in bedrooms, stairways and hallways. We want to display your images where you, your family, and your guests can enjoy them every day. All of the elements of design—style, color, size, and framing (or choosing not to frame)--will work together to complete the look.

We will think about color harmony before your Stuart, Florida family photo session

The decor of the room where you plan to display your artwork can play a part in the selection of both your clothing and the location for your photo session. The colors in your portraits can add richness to the room's color scheme, whether they blend in with your decor or add unexpected pops of color.

Another option is to display black-and-white portraits. Removing the color from an image can simplify and add impact. It’s also a nice way to create a totally different look, in different areas of your home, from the same portrait session. We might create a large portrait of the family in color and series of images in black and white, for a gallery wall.

It’s important to choose appropriate sizes when displaying your family portraits

We want to choose portrait sizes that fill the space visually without crowding the wall. For a single portrait, it is a good idea to consider the orientation (landscape vs. portrait) before the images are created. For example, some spaces will work well with a strong vertical piece and others will be best with a horizontal. For a collection of images to be hung together, we often group a variety of sizes to create visual movement. Or, sometimes it works best to hang several portraits in the same size and orientation and create a series.

When your finished artwork is on the wall, you will find that it serves as both a tribute to the ones you love and a welcome addition to your home decor.
